I've noted in my journal/organiser (my real, offline one, that not even a handful of people read) that I should write a blog post today about, er... something. But about what? I don't have a subject heading as of yet. Or even inspiration. We'll have to wing it somehow.
Ever since my sisters moved out, it's been refreshing, mostly. Of course, I do miss them occasionally: they're very funny, both of them, and Jane, in particular, texts me randomly even now. Last week she sent a text to ask me if I'd ever seen Napoleon Dynamite, which she highly recommended (I haven't, but she said she will lend me the DVD). Jane's texts, especially to my mother, are severely dramatic (perhaps "dramatic" with quotation marks and an asterisk) and OTT, but this is part of the fun, I guess. They also read like a modernist stream-of-consciousness narrative, as her unfiltered thoughts to herself end up on SMS. "Cool, they have this DVD on CEX's website. And you can order them for 50c. I think I'll do that" - that sort of thing. It's very entertaining (though difficult to respond to in a satisfactory way; you end up going for the same interior monologue approach). Claire we hear less from, but that's positive: at home, she suffered most from what we might call "family-derived cabin fever" and the supposed oppressiveness of our Little House on the Prairie life in the countryside. So if we don't hear from her as much, it probably means she's content.
Speaking of films, the next two I'll have to see will be Avengers: Endgame and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Of course, I'm looking forward to the latter more, as anything that generates more Pokémon love is surely to the benefit of mankind. I'm very happy with the reviews, which seem to indicate that it will be a real treat for Pokémaniacs trying to scour every scene for in-jokes and references. Even the fantastic cityscape posters have me genuinely excited. Endgame will be great I'm sure, and I'm eager to see the conclusion to Phases One, Two, and Three of the MCU, as well as the inevitable defeat of Thanos/resurrection of half the world's population. Marvel Studios' interlinked saga is quite an incredible feat in cinema history (I can't think of any story that has been sustained that long in film), and each entry falls, broadly, into different genres (Ant-Man is sort of a heist/spy film, Doctor Strange is trippy sci-fi, etc). But it's still a little repetitive; or, if it hasn't felt that way yet, it is going to get repetitive, when you consider that they'll have to ramp up the tension all the way to the climatic Phase Six. Hard to think about them doing it all again over the course of another 22 films or whatever... But Detective Pikachu, now, as formulaic as the mystery might be, is NOT something that has been tried before (Pokémon in a live-action film). So, I like the prospect of that even more than the Avengers vs Thanos. Especially when Endgame is 3 hours long. Yeesh. Anyway, I'll have to see it soon, because it's a nuisance having to avoid spoilers.
